Did you know? - The street tree and tree well in front of your home is YOUR responsibility.
If you're lucky enough to have a street tree in front of your property in the City of Allentown, it is regulated under the City of Allentown Shade Tree Ordinance which outlines the property owners responsibility to maintain, protect, and preserve the tree.
What does this mean? This means you should be watering, mulching, pruning, and protecting the tree. It may sound like a lot, but it's really not.
Watering - water a newly planted tree the equivalent of 1" of rain per week during the growing season for the first year or two.
Mulching - At least once a year apply 2" - 3" of organic bark mulch to the tree well, but keep the area immediately around the base of the trunk clear of mulch. Mulching helps to retain moisture in the soil and reduces weeds.
Protect the tree - do not allow kids or animals to break branches or chew or strip bark. Never park a vehicle on the roots or place any heavy objects. Never attach, hang, or affix anything to the tree.
Street Trees will also require periodic pruning, and don't forget to keep your tree well clear of litter, animal waste, and weeds to ensure an aesthetically pleasing streetscape in your neighborhood.
The Shade Tree Ordinance also regulates the removal of or replacement of Street Trees. For more information:
